Opening: Thursday 2 April, 5-7pm

Offsite:

3 April – 15 May 2026

Housing Relations presents an ambitious body of work produced over the past decade. Initiated by Dieneke Jansen and developed in partnership with Shadow, and Te Huringa Totoro, the exhibition focuses on a unique body of collaborative photography, video, and installation-based works developed since 2019. Seen together, the works attest to a long-term commitment to challenging pertinent issues in Tāmaki Makaurau; including housing justice and the contested nature of tenants’ rights, and the continued rise of homelessness and rough sleeping.

Building on this three-person collaboration, Housing Relations draws in more than 40 additional participants who contribute additional photographic and video material, and voice their perspectives through interviews, demonstrations and gatherings. In this way, the exhibition stresses collectivity as a key conduit, not only for producing work but responding to an inherently inequitable system.

Throughout the exhibition on Saturdays (12-4pm) the public is invited to visit and contribute to the exhibition through the Studio Lounge (further information follows). Also, in addition to the primary exhibition at Wai Ngutu Kākā, for the duration of the show the 2025 installation Neighbourhood Channel will be specially presented in the street-facing window of Small Rave, 74 Karangahape Road.

Dieneke Jansen is a Senior Lecturer in Visual Art at AUT Auckland University of Technology. Born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Jansen lives and works in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Her work tests the parameters of lens-based documentary and social practice, exploring relational dimensions of lens-based documentary with collaborative events of making and exhibiting. Jansen has exhibited throughout Aotearoa, and her international projects include Dwelling on the Stoep, Jakarta Biennale 16, 2025; This Housing Thing, screened in the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, 2022, Composite (Naarm/ Melbourne), and Storage Art Space (Bangkok); and 90DAYS+ Why is it necessary for you to Move, presented in the exhibition Before is Now – Ko Muri Ko Nāianei, Fotonoviembre Biennial 14, Canary Islands, 2017.

Shadow has collaborated with Jansen since establishing Radio NFA (No Fixed Abode) in 2012, and two subsequent projects initiated with Artspace Aotearoa; Shadow’s Studio: Chatting with Scones (2022), and Backdoor Doorbell Studios (2022). Additional collaborations include two Te Mātāwai projects, Who’s Who: Knowing Your Neighbour (2024) and Knowing Your Neighbour a Bit More (2024), Front Door Dialogues (Audio Foundation), and Neighbourhood Channel, first realised in 2025. In 2020 Shadow accompanied the Hobson Street Theatre Company to Rotterdam as their photographer and videographer, and he regularly works as a photographer for Lifewise.

Te Huringa Totoro works across a range of creative practices, including woodcuts, screen-printing, and aluminum etching, as well as handcrafts produced in wood and embroidery. She has exhibited at Toi Ora, and began collaborating with Jansen and Shadow in 2024, initially working on the Te Mātāwai projects, Who’s Who: Knowing Your Neighbour and Knowing Your Neighbour a Bit More. The collaboration continued with Front Door Dialogues (Audio Foundation), and Neighbourhood Channel, 2025.
